About this tool

Random grouping guide

Random team generator for evenly sized groups

Enter or paste a roster, choose between two and five teams, and generate a random assignment. Everyone is used once, and team sizes differ by no more than one person.

This tool balances headcount only. It does not know skill, age, role, experience, or other traits, so a facilitator should review the result when those factors matter.

Paste names and choose the team count

Enter one name per line, or separate names with commas or semicolons. Review the roster, remove mistakes, choose the number of teams, and press Generate teams. Run it again when the group wants a fresh assignment.

How uneven totals are handled

Players are shuffled, then assigned to teams in rotation. If the total is not divisible by the team count, the extra people are distributed one per team. Ten people in three teams therefore become 4, 3, and 3—not 4, 4, and 2.

Random teams are not skill-balanced teams

Random assignment reduces deliberate picking, but chance can still place several experienced players together. For sports or assessed work, review the result and adjust it using relevant information the tool does not collect.

Roster privacy

Names are processed in the current page and are not sent to a server-side application database. Use first names or nicknames on shared screens, and avoid sensitive personal information.

Frequently asked questions

Can I paste a whole list?

Yes. Use one name per line, or separate names with commas or semicolons.

Are the teams equal in skill?

No. The tool keeps headcounts as even as possible but has no skill or role data.

What happens when the numbers do not divide evenly?

Extra people are distributed one per team, so the largest and smallest teams differ by at most one person.
